Photography Q&A

Q:  What kind of camera do you use?

 A. I use the following cameras: Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EOS REBEL T1i, Canon Powershoot SD770IS, Canon PowerShot D20 Waterproof, (I'm a Canon fan!), or whatever camera someone is nice enough to lend me when I see something that catches my eye.  If you are curious what camera and/or lens I used for a certain post or photograph, just ask!

Q:  What kind of lenses do you use?

A:  I have five lenses, but I tend to use my Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle as my go-to lense for landscape photography and morning/evening shots (it's basically always attached to my 5D).  I also use my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM frequently, particularly as it's much smaller than the wide angle lense and the fixed focal point allows for more rapid shutter speed and more flattering people photos.  After moving to Zimbabwe and becoming obsessed with photography game drives, I've now begun shooting also with the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM.  The last two lenses I use are the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS and the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS but these I use significantly less.

Q. Do you use editing or post-production programs?

A. I use Lightroom 3, however I use it primarily for the same type of touch ups you would perform in a darkroom (exposure, clarity, contrast, and sharpening).  Often I just am too lazy (err, I mean busy) to touch it up and typically the photograph I post is without any touch up other than adding the copyright.

Q. Did you go to school for photography?

A: Other than a semester class in high school on developing film, I've never had training or classes of any kind. There is so much I want to learn that the thought of photography school has (more than once) tempted me to quit my job and expand my education.  The photographs you see on this blog are from a self-taught photographer who has spent more time tinkering with a camera trying to figure things out than one would like to admit...Definitely a hobbyist!

If you've any questions about a specific post or photograph, please just ask!
