The Victoria Falls Hotel & Bridge

Photobucket
The Victoria Falls Bridge, Zimbabwe

Photobucket
This post is a bit delayed, but at the end of the dry season, I visited Victoria Falls for the first time.
This was my first glimpse of one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World.

Photobucket
I loved the image of this man reading outside the Victoria Falls Hotel.

Photobucket
Oh, Cape Town, how far off you are!
Although closer than Egypt!
(How far my photos have come..the Egypt link was basically my first post ever!)

Photobucket
The Falls.

The Victoria Falls Hotel.

Photobucket
This is the bridge people bungee jump into the gorge from...um, no thank you!
Especially after this into the crocodile infested Zambezi River!!
Eerily, I forgot it happened last New Year's Eve.

....Happy New Year's Eve, hopefully it will be better this year for that Australian tourist.

Photobucket
The hotel was built in 1904 to accommodate passengers coming to see the Falls on the Cape to Cairo railway.

More to come on the Falls itself!!

Snapshots from the road: the most beautiful drive

Photobucket
While visiting Cape Town, South Africa, I drove along the coast of the Cape Peninsula.

Photobucket
The scenes, from its cliffs, to its coast lines, just left me on repeat of a gush of "wow, wow, wow..."

Photobucket
The Cape Peninsula has dramatic mountains, absolutely adorable penguins

Photobucket
staggering capes of stunning beauty and historic importance, and beautiful bays like this one.

Photobucket
I have a thing for sunsets.

Photobucket
Camps Bay.

Photobucket
Okay, let's face it, I should probably just admit it:

Photobucket
My sunset obsession is very nearly as strong...if not stronger, than my lighthouse obsession.

Photobucket
I officially have a problem, but it's nearly impossible not to when Africa is just engulfed in stunning sunsets.

Cape Point, South Africa

Photobucket
Not far from the Cape of Good Hope is Cape Point, South Africa.

Photobucket
The goal: hike up to this wonderful lighthouse.
(It's been so long since I've been able to feed my lighthouse addiction!!)

Photobucket
Up this beautiful path we went...

Photobucket
...and wow. Wow. Wow.  Just pausing en route took your breath away.
This is the Cape of Good Hope and Dias Beach.

Photobucket
The lighthouse made me miss the waters of Senegal.

Photobucket
The trip to the paths near the lighthouse are more that worth it.
Look at those cliffs!  That water!  Just wow. Wow. Wow!

Photobucket

For some reason, the cliffs made me think of this movie clip.
It's probably because I'm a huge fan and am still waiting to come face-to-face with a ROUS.

Photobucket
Looking down put the drop into perspective...
...and made me feel like a wimp. I mean, seriously!  This lizard was just chilling. No big deal.

Photobucket
New York City was 12,541 kilometers from the Cape Point lighthouse.
It had never felt so far away before.

Take My Breath Away: The Cape of Good Hope

Photobucket
The Cape of Good Hope, South Africa

Photobucket
The view of the Cape of Good Hope and Dias Beach from Cape Point.
.
Photobucket
The Cape of Good Hope is the most south western tip of Africa.
(I've also been to Africa's most western tip!)

Photobucket
The Cape is absolutely a take-your-breath-away moment of stunning beauty.

Photobucket
The first "modern" rounding of the Cape happened in 1488 by Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias.
Dias called the cape the Cape of Storms but John II later renamed it because of the optimism the opening of the
sea route to India and the East was so great.

Photobucket
It was fitting that a ship--albeit a small sailboat--sailed past as we watched the Cape's crashing waves.

Photobucket
The Cape of Good Hope is the home of The Flying Dutchman, a ship that never returned to port.
Legend is it's crewed by tormented and damned ghosts who forever try to round the cape but never succeed.

Photobucket
Another view of the Cape.

Photobucket
With its stunning beauty, the Cape of Good Hope, after traveling the Skeleton Coast of Namibia,
was extremely dangerous for ships---wrecks line Africa's south western coast.

The View from Table Mountain (An Ode to Cape Town)

Photobucket
On a lovely visit to South Africa's Cape Town, we went to the top of Table Mountain.

Photobucket
It was breathtaking.

Photobucket
And once away from the sharp drops and cliffs of its edge, you'd almost forget you're on top of a mountain.
If you're curious what the mountain looks like, click here.

Photobucket
Lion's Head from Table Mountain.
The piece of the land to the right?  That's Robben Island,
site of the prison where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned by the apartheid government for 27 years.

Photobucket
Part of Table Bay.  How beautiful is that water?!

Photobucket
Cape Town, Table Bay, and Table Mountain are just stunning.  These photos don't do the dramatic vistas remote justice.

Did I say before I want to go back?  Because I do.

You don't need a holiday, you need Cape Town

Photobucket
I woke up every morning in Cape Town to this view.
Bliss.

Photobucket
Table Mountain rises right up in the center of the city.

Photobucket
Literally.  It's breathtaking the first time you see it.

Photobucket
Cape Town is officially one of my favorite places.

Photobucket
The Cape is breathtaking.  Breathtaking.
