In honor of the conclusion of my time in Africa,

Out of the Mountain of Despair, a Stone of Hope

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C., United States

The memorial only opened in late 2011 and honors the civil rights activist.

He is the first African American honored with a memorial on or near the National Mall.

This quote is from his famous "I Have a Dream" speech given at the Lincoln Memorial on 28 August 1963.

If you have a chance, visit it at night: it was much more powerful and moving.

The memorial is inscribed with words from the Gettysburg Address and Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address.

Lincoln was tall, but not this tall: if Lincoln were to stand up with the same proportions as he is sitting, he would be 28 feet tall.

Korean War Veterans Memorial

The Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., United States.

The statues amazingly captured the tiredness of the men.

Wreaths in memory of those lost and missing during the war.

There are 19 men dressed in full combat gear, representing a squad on patrol with men
from the Army, the Marine Corps, a Navy Corpsman, and an Air Force Air Observer.

The wall has the reflection of 38 soldiers, representing the 38th parallel.

Washington Monument: The World's Tallest Stone Structure

During the summer, these paddle boats are out in force.  Reminds me a bit of these boats.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The wall lists the servicemen who were either confirmed Killed in Action (KIA) or Missing in Action (MIA) and are listed in chronological order.

  As of May 2011, there are 58,272 names on the wall, including 1,200 who are still MIA, which are denoted with a cross.

When a visitor looks upon the wall, his reflection can be seen simultaneously with the engraved names, 

which is meant to symbolically bring the past and present together.

The Jefferson Memorial

The Jefferson Memorial and Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., United States

The memorial was completed in 1943 and honors the third American President: Thomas Jefferson.

The memorial closely resembles Thomas Jefferson's Rotunda at the University of Virginia and the Pantheon in Rome

Rudulph Evan's statue of Jefferson; the excerpts on the wall are from the Declaration of Independence.
